Joanne O’Brien is the author of two important books chronicling the lives of people in Ireland and Britain. Her first book Across the Water, which she co-wrote in 1988, was a study in words and pictures about the lives of Irish women in Britain. It opened the way for many later studies on the subject and continues to be cited frequently by scholars of Irish Studies.
Her most recent book A Matter of Minutes (2002) tells the story of those closely affected by the events of Bloody Sunday in Derry in 1972. Black & white portraits, many made on the site of the shootings, are combined with oral testimony from relatives, surviving injured and other key witnesses.
